Up and Running

Amazingly, our electricity came back sooner than expected and we have been up and running for a couple days now! Mikayla took that a little too literally on Friday night as she ran around the corner - and slipped in a puddle of water on the floor. The first time there were just a few tears with no real injuries - it was when she ran around the corner on the way BACK and slipped AGAIN that she got hurt. She hit her head on the step and got a gaping cut by her eye. We immediately saw that she needed stitches (our normal Liquid bandage and butterfly routine wouldn't cut it this time!) so we started calling around to see if there was a Dr. in our city who could stitch it, hopefully a plastic surgeon since it was on her face and could leave a nasty scar. All our Dr. acquaintances said, if she was their daughter, they would take her to Manila to have a plastic surgeon stitch it. So we dropped the boys off with friends and headed up to Manila as quickly as we could. The trip up there was quite the adventure with all the flooding and typhoon damage, but we made it safely, and they were able to reach the plastic surgeon across town despite the city-wide power outtage. He eventually made it through the torn up city to the hospital, and he did an EXCELLENT job stitching up Mikayla's nearly 1-inch cut. He put on dissolvable stitch down deep, a running stitch of sorts above that, and 2 regular stitches on the top. Mikayla was a little trouper through the whole thing and didn't fuss at all! We were so proud of her. Please pray with us that it would not get infected as it heals.
On a side note, I (Jen) have had a large abcess growing on the side of my face. I have been on antibiotics for 4 days now, and it has decreased the swelling dramatically. But it is still not gone; please pray with us that it goes away on its own and does not require surgery to remove it.

Hi Steve Jen and kids,

I enjoyed your latest letter, and just today went onto the blog to update myself - what a journey you have embarked on, though it seems you all are prospering and creating cherished memories (hopefully mostly good) along the way. Sandi keeps us updated on a regular basis, and I know her and John are so excited about prospect of being able to come visit you.

Life is going along fine - I'm teaching and working on dissertation proposal - believe I'll be able to increase no. of classes I teach next semester which will help out financially and allow me to still have two full days during the week to work on dissertation. Laura will come home for Christmas - it's so nice to actually have a real home for her to come to this year!! Tomorrow I"m going to see Grandma Lois - Holly is also going to try as she wants her to help make some cards for her friend in Hawaii that just got married. Holly's enjoying being an airline captain now - she's flying turbo prop plane and says it's actually more fun than the jets - though she still wants to return to the jets as the pay is better.

Take care, and know that many thoughts and prayers are with you. LeAnn
